State police say Buckel was seen late Sunday near a rest area, where Lacey police say state troopers and Buckel’s family had made arrangements for him to turn himself in. But, he was gone when state police arrived.
“Everyone was scared. Everyone was locking their doors. I even had one of my family members call me to come out by their house because they thought they heard something,” said Corey Maguire of Lacey Township.
“A passing motorist thought they saw a person in the woods near the rest stop and Detective Pierce was in a position, with a state corrections officer, to take the subject down quickly.” Lacey Township Police Chief David Paprota said.
Buckel was discovered missing last Tuesday when guards did a count in the Ancora unit of Bayside State Prison in Hammonton. He was just three weeks from becoming eligible for parole for aggravated assault.
Buckel previously served 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter of a 10-month-old child.
